Cyclone Phyan might not hit Mumbai directly, though the metropolis will feel its impact due to extremely heavy rainfall, Meteorological Department officials said on Wednesday.
Cyclone Phyan is 350 kms away from Mumbai, said authorities, adding that they are ready for the storm. IMD officials earlier said that the cyclone might skip Mumbai and head for south Gujarat.
A cyclone alert has been sounded across north Maharashtra and south Gujarat, besides coastal areas, by the Meteorological Department, in the wake of a deep depression over the Arabian Sea.The bulletin said the deep depression (system) is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm.The Met office has advised fishermen not to venture out to sea in Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.It warned that Mumbai and Thane districts will receive very heavy rains.

In the afternoon perhaps, it will be more severe. Disturbed weather is expected with heavy rains, storms and the ea will become very rough," said a Meteorological Department official.
"All drilling operations, helicopter sorties and construction and maintenance work has been suspended due to the cyclone warning," ONGC Chairman RS Sharma said.
With cyclonic storm Phyan approaching coastlines, the Centre has alerted Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa and is sending disaster response forces to assist these states. A team of the National Disaster Response Force has also been sent to Kottagiri in the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, where a school has been marooned, following heavy rains. Home Ministry sources said besides the three western states, authorities of the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
